◊ The Alto Monferrato is a hilly and mountainous region in the south of the province of Alessandria on the borders with Liguria and with the province of Asti. It is characterized by a dense geometry of vineyards alternating with isolated villages, fortified buildings and places of worship. Abundant “of castle and vineyards”, the Alto Monferrato presents an extraordinary variety of landscapes, from the gentle undulating hills to the harsher and more severe panoramas where the vineyards blend into woods. With the experience gained over the centuries, local farmers have varied crops and vines: the calcareous-marly white soils are ideal for producing strong wines rich in body and color, the red soils (silt and clay) are suitable for white wines while the sandy lands – which cannot hold the water – create extremely delicate reds. Alta Langa, Asti, Barbera d'Asti, Barbera del Monferrato Superiore, Dolcetto d'Asti, Grignolino d'Asti, Loazzolo, Monferrato to name just a few of the main DOCG and DOC wines in the area. Always here the rich tradition of the distillation of the marc, maintained over time, helps to create important grappas that go well with dry biscuits from the same area. The gastronomic heritage is also very rich, from the spontaneous products of the earth (mushrooms, truffles, chestnuts) to the various culinary specialties (Filetto Baciato di Ponzone, Ravioli del Plin, Batzoa, Robiola di Roccaverano, Cardo Gobbo di Nizza Monferrato, Amaretti di Mombaruzzo, etc. .).
12:30 | Lunch at selected restaurant (set tasting menu or 3 courses à la carte, drinks excluded).
Continuation of panoramic tour of the Monferrato Hills.
16:00 | Visit to a selected Basso Monferrato winery with tasting.
◊ Bordered to the north and east by the Po and Tanaro rivers, the Casalese area is characterized by the soft hills which, with the exception of the Sacro Monte di Crea, do not exceed 400 meters and are home to vineyards of Barbera, Grignolino, Freisa, Malvasia and Ruchè. The old villages made of canton stone, the cellars and the infernot – typical cavities dug out of the tuff and used for storing wine – the parish churches between the rows and luxuriant woods, shape a unique landscape. Fascinating hills and historic villages are also found in the Asti area, the land of choice for Barbera. The rich carnet of the wines of Basso Monferrato includes fifteen DOC and four DOCG (Asti, Barbera d'Asti, Barbera del Monferrato Superiore, Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato). The cuisine is also very rich, based on a wide range of products such as meats, vegetables, sausages, cheeses, local varieties of honey, hazelnuts, etc.
